Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
Mean: sum of all values ÷ count. Median: middle value when sorted (average of two middle values for even count). Mode: the most frequent value. Mean is affected by outliers; median is more robust. If a dataset has one very high value, the median may better represent the "centre".
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the numbers. With an even count, the median = average of the two middle numbers. Example: [2, 4, 6, 8] → middle values are 4 and 6 → median = (4+6)/2 = 5.
How is standard deviation calculated?
Population SD = √(Σ(x − mean)² / n). Sample SD = √(Σ(x − mean)² / (n−1)). This calculator shows population SD. Use sample SD when your data is a sample from a larger population (divide by n−1, Bessel's correction).
