📊 Worked Example

Priya has an annual CTC of ₹12,00,000 with 50% basic, Employee PF included, New Tax Regime.

  • Gross monthly salary = ₹12,00,000 ÷ 12 = ₹1,00,000
  • Annual basic = ₹12,00,000 × 50% = ₹6,00,000  →  Monthly basic = ₹50,000
  • Employee PF = 12% × ₹50,000 = ₹6,000/month
  • Professional Tax ≈ ₹200/month
  • Taxable income (new regime) = ₹12 L – ₹75,000 std deduction = ₹11.25 L  →  Tax ≈ ₹93,600/year → ₹7,800/month
  • Monthly in-hand = ₹1,00,000 – ₹6,000 – ₹200 – ₹7,800 = ₹86,000/month

Salary Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

What is CTC and how is it different from in-hand salary?+
CTC (Cost to Company) is the total annual package — it includes your basic salary, HRA, allowances, employer's PF contribution, gratuity provision, and any other perks. In-hand salary is what hits your bank account after deducting employee PF, professional tax, and income tax TDS. For most salaried employees, in-hand is 75–88% of CTC, with higher CTC levels seeing a larger gap due to income tax.
Which is better — old tax regime or new tax regime?+
The new regime (default from FY 2024-25) offers lower tax rates and a ₹75,000 standard deduction but no other deductions. Income up to ₹7 lakh is effectively tax-free under the new regime. The old regime allows deductions under 80C (₹1.5 L), HRA, home loan interest (₹2 L), NPS, etc. — beneficial if your total deductions exceed ₹2–3 lakh. For most employees earning below ₹12 LPA with limited deductions, the new regime gives higher in-hand. Based on Budget 2025-26. Verify with a CA or income-tax.gov.in before filing.
What is the PF deduction and can I opt out?+
Employee PF is 12% of your basic salary, capped at ₹1,800/month (basic ≤ ₹15,000). Your employer matches the same 12%. If your employer allows, and your basic salary exceeds ₹15,000/month, you can opt out of EPF (or contribute only on ₹15,000). Staying in EPF is generally beneficial — it earns 8.25% interest (tax-free up to ₹2.5 L/year), builds a retirement corpus, and includes insurance under EDLI.
What is Professional Tax and does everyone pay it?+
Professional Tax (PT) is a state government tax on salaried workers. It varies: Maharashtra ₹200/month (max ₹2,500/year); Karnataka ₹200/month (for salaries above ₹15,000); Tamil Nadu ₹208/month; Telangana ₹150–200/month. Some states — Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP — do not levy PT at all. It is deducted by your employer and remitted to the state government. PT paid is deductible under income tax.
