About BMI
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated as weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). It is a useful screening tool but does not directly measure body fat percentage.
Is BMI accurate for Indians?
Research suggests that Asian populations, including Indians, tend to have higher body fat percentage at a given BMI compared to Western populations. Some health guidelines recommend lower BMI thresholds for Indians — overweight at 23+ and obese at 27.5+.
What are the limitations of BMI?
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. Elderly people may have a normal BMI but high body fat. Always consult a doctor for a full health assessment.
