About Ideal Weight

Which formula is most accurate?

No single formula is perfect for everyone. The BMI-based range (18.5–24.9) is the most widely used. The Devine formula was originally developed for drug dosing. For Indians, research suggests a BMI of 18.5–23 may be more appropriate due to higher body fat at lower BMI.

Does muscle mass matter?

Yes. These formulas assume average body composition. Muscular individuals (athletes, bodybuilders) may weigh more than the ideal range while still being very healthy. Conversely, someone within the range can have high body fat if they have low muscle mass.
