Finding the area of a shape
Area measures the space inside a two-dimensional shape, and it's always given in square units. Each shape has its own formula: a rectangle is length times width, a circle is π times the radius squared, and a triangle is half the base times the height. This calculator covers the seven most common shapes and shows the formula it used so you can follow the working, not just copy the answer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the area of a circle?
It's π × r², where r is the radius. For a radius of 7, the area is about 153.94 square units.
Why is area always in square units?
Because you're multiplying two lengths together. Metres × metres gives square metres (m²), and so on.
How do I find the area of an odd shape?
Split it into shapes this tool knows — rectangles, triangles and circles — work out each area, and add them together.
