ROI vs CAGR

What is ROI?

Return on Investment (ROI) = (Net Profit / Total Invested) × 100. It tells you the total percentage gain or loss, regardless of time. A 50% ROI over 5 years is very different from a 50% ROI over 1 year.

What is CAGR?

Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) smooths out returns over time and gives the equivalent annual rate at which your investment grew. It is more useful than ROI for comparing investments of different durations. CAGR = (Final / Initial)^(1/years) − 1.

What is a good return?

As a benchmark — US S&P 500 has averaged ~10% CAGR historically. Indian Nifty 50 has averaged ~12–13%. Fixed deposits give ~6–7%. Real estate varies widely by location. Inflation (3–6%) is the minimum return you need just to maintain purchasing power.
