Adding up hours and minutes

Adding times by hand is fiddly because minutes roll over at 60, not 100. This calculator converts every entry to minutes, adds or subtracts them, then converts back — so 2 hours 30 minutes plus 1 hour 45 minutes correctly gives 4 hours 15 minutes, not 3 hours 75. The decimal-hours figure is useful for timesheets and billing, where 4 hours 15 minutes is written as 4.25 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. So 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, and 4 hours 15 minutes is 4.25 hours. The calculator shows this automatically.

Can I subtract time as well as add it?

Yes. Set any row to the minus sign to subtract that entry — useful for taking a lunch break off a work total.

What if the total is negative?

If you subtract more than you add, the total shows with a minus sign.
