Box volume is =length*width*height. Cylinder is =PI()*radius^2*height. Sphere is =4/3*PI()*radius^3. For litres from cubic metres, multiply by 1000.

Working out volume

Volume measures the space inside a 3D object, given in cubic units. A box is length times width times height; a cylinder is π times the radius squared times the height; a sphere is four-thirds π times the radius cubed. Because one cubic metre holds exactly 1,000 litres, this calculator also converts the volume into litres and gallons — handy for sizing a water tank, aquarium or container.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres is one cubic metre?

Exactly 1,000 litres. One cubic centimetre is one millilitre, so 1,000 cm³ also equals one litre.

What's the volume of a cylinder?

π × radius² × height. For a radius of 3 and height of 10, that's about 282.74 cubic units.

How do I find a tank's capacity?

Calculate its volume in cubic metres or centimetres, then read the litres figure — that's how much liquid it holds when full.
