About GST in India
What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty when it was introduced on 1 July 2017.
What is CGST and SGST?
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For example, an 18% GST is collected as 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies.
How to remove GST from an inclusive price?
If a price includes GST, the base price = Total ÷ (1 + GST rate/100). For example, a ₹1,180 price with 18% GST has a base price of ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000.
