Understanding GST

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes with a unified tax system.

Current GST Rates in India

• 5%: Essential items (food grains, etc.)
• 12%: Processed foods, computers
• 18%: Most goods and services (standard rate)
• 28%: Luxury items, automobiles, tobacco

Manual Calculation Methods

Adding GST:
GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Removing GST:
Base Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

Example Calculations

Adding 18% GST:
₹1,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180 GST → ₹1,180 total

Removing 18% GST:
₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price → ₹180 GST portion
