About NPS

What is NPS?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed retirement savings scheme. It is open to all Indian citizens aged 18–70. Contributions grow tax-deferred and at retirement, you can withdraw 60% as a lump sum (tax-free) and must use 40% to buy an annuity for monthly pension.

Tax benefits of NPS

Contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh are deductible under Section 80C. An additional ₹50,000 is deductible under Section 80CCD(1B), making the total potential annual deduction ₹2 lakh — saving up to ₹62,400 in tax (at 30% slab + cess).

Investment options

NPS offers three asset classes: Equity (E), Corporate Bonds (C), and Government Securities (G). Under Auto Choice, allocation shifts from equity-heavy to debt-heavy as you approach retirement. Under Active Choice, you can allocate up to 75% in equity.
