Understanding Inflation

What does inflation mean for savings?

If your savings earn less than the inflation rate, you are actually losing purchasing power over time. For example, if inflation is 6% and your FD gives 7%, your real return is only about 1%.

How to beat inflation?

Equity investments (mutual funds, stocks) have historically given returns of 10–14% in India, well above the 5–6% inflation rate. Diversifying across equity, gold, and real estate helps preserve and grow purchasing power over long periods.
